Google Chrome update version 42 disables Unity3d web player plugin by default

Users signing in to http://intoscience.com/signin/ on Google Chrome may be experiencing difficulties due to a recent update of Chrome to Version 42.0.2311.90 (64-bit).

Google Chrome 'About' window

Confirming your version number

If you have upgraded to this version or you have auto-update enabled then you will be prompted to download and install the unity web player, but doing so returns the original ‘download and install’ message.

The reason for the failure is Chromes withdrawal of NPAPI support: https://www.chromium.org/developers/npapi-deprecation

To fix you can manually re-enable NPAPI by entering the following into the browser:

1.     chrome://flags/#enable-npapi

2.     find the NPAPI option, select ‘enable’, then select ‘relaunch now’ (scroll to the bottom of the list).

Alternatively we suggest using a different web browser (Firefox or Safari) or the standalone Mac OS X or Windows App  available at http://intoscience.com/download/.

A WebGL compatible client for IntoScience will be available in July which will no longer require the plugin.
